Hayling Ladies & Hayling Trophy 2010

HAYLING LADIES' GOLF CLUB

Welcome to the webpages for Hayling Ladies' Golf Club ... one of the oldest ladies' golf clubs in the country ... we celebrated our 125th anniversary in 2009.  Our club was founded in 1884 by Maud Sandeman, sister of Fleetwood Sandeman, the first Captain of Hayling Golf Club .  The first Hayling Ladies' Golf Club had 21 members.

We are unusual in that we are a "Club within a Club", rather than a Ladies' Section, and we are all proud of our history and traditions.  Once you have joined Hayling Golf Club, you may join Hayling Ladies for a small annual subscription fee.  We offer an active qualifying competition programme for ladies of all handicaps, and Hayling Ladies' Golf Club members will also be able to participate in our ladies' trophy competitions, fun days, friendly matches with 22 other clubs, as well as matches with our own Junior, Men's and Vets' sections.  Hayling Ladies also enjoy many social occasions throughout the year.

Our main competition time is Thursday morning, with Alternate Day tee times on Sunday.

We organise a Ladies' Open and a Mixed Open in May, as well as a Centenary Salver and a Coffee & Golf morning in September.  Entry forms for these competitions can by found under Open Competitions (click here).  Our members and their guests can enjoy a Mixed Invitation in July, and two Ladies' Invitations, in August and September,

Our Ladies' course has a Par of 73, with a SS of 74.  We also have a short course with a Par of 66, which we use for beginners, juniors, and for some of our social golf competitions.

We pride ourselves on our competitive spirit, and we participate in many of the Hampshire County competitions, including the Hull Shield, the North Hants Trophy, the Knight Cup and the Stoneham Cup.  We also compete in the Mail on Sunday and Daily Mail Foursomes competitions.

We are very proud of our Hayling Trophy, a singles matchplay competition for 25-36 handicaps, which is now in its seventh year.     Read more.

We welcome applications for membership from ladies of all golfing abilities.  Read more.

Centenary Salver 2010

Hayling Ladies' Golf Club had another terrific entry in our 2010 Centenary Salver on Thursday 2 September.

Thirty-six Hampshire clubs entered this year and we were blessed with wonderful weather.  The competition was completed in less time than usual this year due to the innovation of getting the scores for the first nine holes back to the clubhouse in record time, enabling the 2nd groups to go off whilst the first pairs were on the 10th hole.

Rosemary Grindle was the lady in charge, and she and her team did a fantastic job, and we received many kind words from teams about the excellent organisation of the event, and of the quality of the course.

This year's Centenary Salver was won for the first time by Sandford Springs.  Their team captain Mandy Blunden gave a touching speech, dedicating the victory to her late father, Brian Willetts who had been a member of Hayling Golf Club in the past.

Second place was taken by Stoneham, who were last year's winners, third place winners were Hayling Ladies, and in fourth place were Corhampton.

Below is a slideshow of the four winning team, and there is also a .pdf of the results to download.

2010 HAYLING TROPHY COMPETITITON

Thursday, 20 June 2010
The day of the final!  The finalists this year were Liphook and Romsey.  The weather was wonderful on Hayling ... warm and sunny, but perhaps with a little more breeze than the competitors would have liked.  As usual, the matches were played in very good spirit, which has become the hallmark of this competition.  Congratulations to Liphook who emerged as winners, having won the trophy during its first year 2004, with Romsey as runners-up, unfortunately the third time.  Commiserations to them.  The final was followed by a lunch attended by 60 ladies, including representatives from the 18 teams involved in the Hayling Trophy.  The cup was presented to the winners by Helen Rees, Hayling's Lady President and the inaugurator of the Hayling Trophy.  The Hayling Trophy Competition is organised for Hayling Ladies' Golf Club by Cindy Good and Gill Hailey.

BACKGROUND TO THE HAYLING TROPHY COMPETITITON

The Hayling Trophy was devised in 2004 by the then Lady Captain, Mrs Helen Rees.  She saw the need for bronze players to gain matchplay experience.  The trophy competition started with eight clubs participating, but it proved so successful that it grew to 16 clubs in its second year, and it was increased to 18 in 2010.  Players have handicaps from 25 to 36.

The format is a round robin tournament, played in four groups.  Each club has a team of five players, and plays a home and away match with the other teams in the group.  The winning teams from Groups 1 and 3, and Groups 2 and 4, play each other in the semi final matches, to decide which two teams will compete in the final at Hayling Golf Club.

It has proved to be a very popular and useful competition.  Ladies with higher handicaps gain valuable matchplay experience and enjoy doing it.  The Hayling Trophy is played for from January to June each year, with the final being played at Hayling Golf Club.  There is a prizegiving luncheon which is attended by members of each club who have taken part in the Hayling Trophy.
