"I just wanted to write a quick thankyou for allowing us to play a wonderful courtesy round on your marvellous links track last Friday as East Sussex National was holding the ESGA Masters Championship. Myself and my playing partners enjoyed a wonderful day and were highly impressed, not only with the course but the courtesy shown to us by your pro shop and bar staff. "My son and I played your wonderful course this morning as guests from West Sussex. We were stranded in Emsworth traffic and were late onto the first tee, but so were members playing their morning roll up. Despite the jam and the presence of visitors, with a society beckoning, the members in general and Peter the starter in particular could not have been more charming. We were invited to play up, with and through the field at various points during the round. The course was in outstanding condition and it was a great privilege to play on it. How's this for pleasing your customers? When returning to his hotel in Guildford, Eddie McDonah, a visitor from Yorkshire, realised he had left his mobile in Hayling's changing room. A call to Bar Manager Rodney Combes quickly meant the phone was retrieved. A plan was suggested by Rodney that his wife, who worked in Hazlemere, near to Farnham where Eddie was playing the next day, would take the phone and Eddie could pick it up. Having agreed the plan, Rodney then realised that the greenkeeper from Farnham was standing in the Hayling bar that evening. He was given the phone, took it to Farnham, where it was handed to a grateful Eddie by the Farnham chef on arrival at Farnham. Eddie said: "Enormous thanks to Rodney for his help. Absolutely first class service. What are the chances against this unique set of circumstances happening and of somebody taking the initiative as Rodney did? We had a great day's golf and this made it extra special."
